Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and asserted they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.
The Recording That Triggered the Controversy
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who previously worked in military or security capacities.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to protect and support this founding document," the representatives stated in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should reject improper directives. No one has to follow commands that contravene the law or our constitution."
Trump's Incensed Reply
The video message seemed to prompt a heated reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Dangerous to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a unified statement condemning the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no place in America," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all served our country with great patriotism and honor. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these unhinged online messages and recant his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the statement stated.
Representatives' Firm Response
The representatives who participated in the video also published a declaration.
"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who care for this United States and took an vow to safeguard and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental obligation."
"What's most telling is that the president considers it punishable by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their vow to the constitution and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must join forces and condemn the ex-president's requests for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Further Political Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is calling for the death of government members."
He added: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should condemn this right away and absolutely."
The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", describing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also reportedly informed the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the offense of sedition" but that "lawyers have to parse the wording and determine all that."
Administration Response
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative replied: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the president is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "We see current representatives of the American legislature who conspired to orchestrate a video message to individuals of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to disobey the executive's legal commands."
She said: "The purity of our defense system relies on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause confusion, and that's what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally encouraging."
