Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.

The criminal group breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.

An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.

The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.

The attack in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they expect and desire their children's secure homecoming.
