The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part season created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
