Music Legend Barry Manilow Scheduled for an Operation for Cancer in His Lung.

The singer has disclosed that he received a diagnosis with cancer of the lung and is set to have an operation.

Cancer Caught Early

The legendary 82-year-old artist, whose parade of high-spirited hits from "Copacabana" has made him one of pop music’s enduringly popular showmen, will have a procedure to extract a portion of his lung in an effort to treat the condition, which is detected early.

“For those who have been following, I recently went through six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a relapse of another five weeks.

“Despite the fact that I was over the bronchitis and performing again at the Westgate Las Vegas, my attentive medical team requested an MRI just to be certain that all was clear.

“The MRI identified a tumor on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a fantastic physician) that it was caught so early.”

Rescheduled Shows

He has delayed a series of planned concerts, but stated he would be on stage again by mid-February for his longstanding engagement at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino.

He went on to say: “The medical team do not believe it has metastasized and I’m taking tests to support their conclusion. So, that’s it. Chemo is not needed. Radiation therapy is off the table. Just home remedies and I Love Lucy reruns.

“I’m counting the days until I come back to my second home at the Westgate Las Vegas for our special weekend performances.”

A Long Career and Personal Life

Manilow is presently in his 16th year of a show in Nevada. The singer has been in the public eye and revealed he is gay in 2017, after marrying his partner of many years, Garry Kief in secret in 2014.

The duo were in a discreet partnership for more than 35 years. In 2023, Manilow reflected on how vital his husband had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.

“During my rapid rise to fame, it was just crazy. And, you know, coming home to an lonesome hotel suite, you can find yourself in a lot of problems if you, you know, you’re on your own evening after evening,” he said.

“But I found my partner right around when it was exploding. And I was spared from having to go back to those lonesome rooms. I had a partner to share sorrows with or to enjoy success with.

“I desire that newcomers today don’t have to go back to those suites by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was very solitary until I met Garry. And then it was a shared adventure.”
