SNAP Payments Scheduled to Cease for 41 Million Amid Prolonged US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities stated recently that SNAP funds from a major federal social assistance programs won't be issued next month amid the persistent federal closure.

Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks

The funding lapse lasted its 25th day when the announcement was made, in response to demands from hundreds of Democratic representatives asking the department to tap into contingency funds to pay for next month's benefits.

“Ultimately, the well has run dry,” officials announced. “Currently, assistance will not be provided” beginning in November.

National Consequences

Tens of millions of people depend on the regular assistance, according to federal data. Some regions, like New Mexico, dependence on the program is as high as 21% of residents.

Documents reviewed by journalists revealed that federal authorities chose not to tap reserve funds for November food benefits.

Legislative Deadlock

Congressional leaders remain deadlocked about the way to finance and restart government operations.

Remarks from the head of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities suggested that federal leadership had opportunities to prepare in advance to ensure continuous assistance.

“They had the ability and responsibility taken steps weeks ago to make arrangements to utilize available money,” the remarks concluded. “Instead, they might decide against it for potential political benefit” while GOP lawmakers attempt to push upper chamber Democrats to approve legislation to restart federal functions.

Local Responses

Executives in two affected states declared states of emergency in recent days to make money available for hunger relief expecting SNAP benefits not being issued during the upcoming period.
