It has been 30 years since the original Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and bringing viewers to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Gang

In the teaser shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a brand new plaything, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (the actress), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Connections from the Previous Film

At the very least, some elements are continuing from the earlier movie. The last thing Woody did before departing for his fresh path was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia pinned to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the key figure among the toys.
