United States and United Kingdom Caution of Major Digital Visa Information Leak in Somali Nation

At least 35,000 people may be compromised, warns the American embassy

A major security compromise in the Somali electronic visa system may have exposed sensitive details associated with many thousands of individuals, comprising American nationals, the US embassy in the Somali nation has alerted.

The embassy reported gathered trustworthy accounts that "unknown cyber attackers" had penetrated the Somali government's electronic visa system, likely endangering information belonging to roughly 35,000 people.

The leaked documents circulating online contain full names, images, dates of birth, relationship status, home addresses and email information, per a United States official announcement published on recently.

"This security incident remains active and could expose all private information submitted to the system," British authorities has similarly alerted visitors.

"Consider the risks prior to requesting a digital visa mandatory for travel to the Federal Republic."

Administrative Action

Somali authorities have remained silent on the breach. Nevertheless administration officials has transferred visa application system from the previous platform evisa.gov.so toward etas.gov.so, without issuing a public clarification.

"Although the US Embassy in Mogadishu lacks the capacity to validate if personal information is part of the breach, travelers who have requested visas through the electronic visa system may be affected," the US' statement declared.

Geopolitical Impact

Somalia's new system requires all travellers, incorporating applicants from the autonomous region of the breakaway region and the semi-autonomous region of the autonomous state, to apply for travel visas online.

Critics say applicants have experienced extra fees in specific areas, equivalent to duplicate payments.

Political Context

Somaliland, that announced sovereignty in three decades ago, administers its affairs through independent structures although it lacks internationally recognised. The Federal Government maintains that the region remains part of its national domain.

The alleged breach exacerbates ongoing disputes between Somali federal authorities and Somaliland administration concerning jurisdiction of aviation space. Even though Somalia restored complete authority of national aviation space in 2017, Somaliland regularly disputes this agreement.

Ongoing Conflict

The conflict intensified recently when the northern region's leader Abdirahman Irro announced the northern territory would refuse Mogadishu's electronic visa and instructed that carriers are required to secure clearance from Hargeisa prior to accessing their territorial skies.

Yet leading carriers have declined to board passengers absent Mogadishu's electronic permit.

In the latest development, the northern region's top diplomat the diplomatic representative reaffirmed that "every person entering the northern territory should receive travel authorization at the point of entry", saying the federal electronic visa platform posed risks and alerting that "individual details might be obtained by radical elements" due to employing the platform.

Aviation Challenges

The impasse has caused some travellers heading to the northern region stuck in transit hubs following refusal of entry due to absence of Somalia's e-visa.

The northern region's aviation official, the transport official, has stated to media outlets that the instructions - originally publicized earlier this year - became operational on 10 November.

Officials declared airlines that do not comply will be told to change course, and stated numerous flights were previously redirected.

Airspace Control Conflict

Recorded material released by Hargeisa's civil aviation authority reportedly displays territorial flight directors giving directions to international pilots - an action applauded locally as an assertion of Somaliland's autonomy.

However the federal aviation regulator maintains it retains complete jurisdictional power over the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (aviation control zone), that includes the whole nation's airspace. Officials have directed all aircraft to ignore any instructions issued by sources besides central government.

Authorities alerted that ignoring national and worldwide air transport standards could generate aviation dangers and lead to "serious legal consequences".
