While Sunbathers Escaped Violence, Viral Image Depicts Rescuer Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, has always considered the iconic beach as her personal space. On that particular Sunday evening, she, similar to other local residents, noticed cracking sounds echoing through the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was too light and no one could see them,” she explains. Stepping out of her home, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the avenue, talking to a duo who had rushed up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone approaching at her rear. It was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone heading in the direction that all the others was trying to get away from, while holding that big kit and barefoot … He moved into something that surely every fibre in your being would signal you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism During Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of heroism in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, law enforcement and medical teams caring for numerous the injured.

Collective Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the site of the incident becoming a makeshift medical station. Accounts show that other team members were also seen responding bravely, such as entering the surf to rescue people needing help.

In the days after the tragedy, statements of support circulated widely. One post expressed gratitude for the individuals who showed that “kindness will always overcome hatred”.

The team of rescuers later shared a statement, explaining they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the kindness for our responders,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will share our stories in the belief that it helps those impacted.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the staff acted heroically from the moment the shooting started until late that evening.

“There have been so many moving stories, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” stated a council representative.

“These individuals demonstrate dedication every day in ensuring our iconic coastlines protected for the public, but what we witnessed on that evening should be commended.

“As we grieve and process the terror of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is vital that we consider just how much light we have witnessed in the face of such darkness.”
